What are the common health problems that can develop during pregnancy ?

Diabetes

During the months of pregnancy, the body’s need for insulin will go up to help the baby grow. However, in late pregnancy, the hormones estrogen, cortisol, and human placental lactogen can block insulin. When there is insufficient insulin, glucose cannot go into the body’s cells and stays in the bloodstream. A higher than normal blood sugar level will possibly lead to gestational diabetes mellitus and increase the risk of adverse maternal outcomes. Risk factors of gestational diabetes mellitus include age of 35 or above, diabetes in an immediate family member, overweight and obesity.

Thyroid disease

The thyroid gland produces thyroxine and plays vital roles in regulating the body’s metabolic rate. When the thyroid gland is overactive, it causes hyperthyroidism and speeds up the body processes. Common hyperthyroidism symptoms are nervousness, anxiety, weight loss, bulging eyes and rapid heartbeat. Irregular heartbeat can lead to heart failure, blood clots and stroke. The incidence of hyperthyroidism in Hong Kong is 0.8% in a cohort study over 20 years. It is more common in younger age groups and affects women at their childbearing age. Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism may lead to preterm birth and low birth weight for the baby. When you are planning for pregnancy, it is recommended to consult with a doctor to ensure your thyroid status is optimized.

What is the purpose of semen analysis ?

One in every six couples have trouble getting pregnant. About 30% of the causes relate to women, men account for another 30% of infertility cases, and the rest are common causes.

Routine semen analysis provides useful information concerning sperm production, i.e.: sperm count, morphology and motility. A decrease in sperm number, motility, and normal morphology are common causes of infertility.

How to perform a semen analysis ?

First, you will pick-up a semen collection container at the clinic.The clinic staff will provide detailed information on semen sample submission procedures. You can collect your sample at home on another day. Please send the semen sample to the appointed laboratory at the designated time.
